ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR Field Trials of Solid Triple Lure (Trimedlure, Methyl Eugenol, Raspberry Ketone, and DDVP) Dispensers for Detection and Male Annihilation of Ceratitis capitata, Bactrocera dorsalis, and Bactrocera cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Hawaii

چکیده
SolidMallet TMR (trimedlure [TML], methyl eugenol [ME], raspberry ketone [RK]) wafers and Mallet CMR (ceralure, ME, RK, benzyl acetate) wafers impregnated with DDVP (2,2dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate) insecticideweremeasured in traps as potential detection andmale annihilation technique (MAT) devices. Comparisons were made with 1) liquid lure and insecticide formulations, 2) solid cones and plugs with an insecticidal strip, and 3) solid single and double lure wafers with DDVP for captures of Mediterranean fruit ßy, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann); oriental fruit ßy, Bactrocera dorsalisHendel; and melon ßy, B. cucurbitaeCoquillett. Bucket and Jackson traps were tested in a coffeeplantationnearEleele,Kauai Island,HI (trials at highpopulations) andavocado orchards near Kona, HI Island, HI (trials at low populations). Captures of all three species withMallet TMRwere not different fromMallet CMR; therefore, subsequent experiments did not includeMallet CMR because of higher production costs. InMAT trials near Eleele, HI captures in AWPM traps with Mallet TMRwafers were equal to any other solid lure (single or double) except theMallet MEwafer. In survey trials nearKona, captures ofC. capitata,B. cucurbitae, andB. dorsaliswithMalletTMRwafers were equal to those for the standard TML,ME, and C-L traps used in FL and CA. A solidMallet TMR wafer is safer, more convenient to handle, andmay be used in place of several individual lure and trap systems, potentially reducing costs of large survey and detection programs in Florida and California, and MAT programs in Hawaii.

ECOLOGY, BEHAVIOR AND BIONOMICS Oviposition Behavior of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae): Association Between Oviposition Preference and Larval Performance in Individual Females
The oviposition preference and larval performance of females of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) were examined. Wild or laboratory-reared females were tested for oviposition preference in relation to papaya fruit in different stages of ripeness, as well as to two different fruits: papaya and apple. The results demonstrated that both laboratory-reared and wild females preferred ripe papaya fruit c...

Previous research showed that exposure to ginger root, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, oil increased the mating success of mass-reared, sterile males of the Mediterranean fruit ßy, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). This work, however, involved the exposure of small groups of males (n 25) in small containers (volume 400 ml). Several sterile male release programs use plastic adult rearing containers (s...
متن کاملECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR Exceptional Longevity in the Tephritid, Ceratitis rosa, a Close Relative of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly
This study shows that the fruit ßy,Ceratitis rosa (Karsch), has a signiÞcantly longer life span than the medßy, C. capitata (Wiedemann); the species used as a model organism for the demographics of insect aging. This was somewhat surprising given that both have similar distributions and overlapping niches. We postulate that the greater longevity of C. rosa is related to the fact that it can occ...
متن کاملEffect of Surround WP on behavior and mortality of apple maggot (Diptera: Tephritidae).
Apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a key pest in apple (Malus spp.) production areas located in the northeastern and midwestern United States and the eastern provinces of Canada. The development of Surround WP has offered a new approach for controlling apple maggot and other tephritid species, because this material is considered to be compatible with advanced ...
متن کاملIndividual-Based Modeling Approach to Assessment of the Impacts of Landscape Complexity and Climate on Dispersion, Detectability and Fate of Incipient Medfly Populations
The objective of the presented study was to demonstrate the potential of a bottom-up "ethological" approach and individual-based model of Markov-like stochastic processes, employed to gain insights into the factors driving behavior and fate of the invasive propagule, which determine the initial stages of pest invasion and "cryptic" existence of the localized, ultra-low density incipient pest po...
